Philip Evergood
(1901-1973)

Born in New York City and raised in London, Philip Evergood was one of the leading modernists of the 20th Century employing styles that combined abstraction and realism. A student of George Luks at the Art Students League in New York, Evergood was heavily influenced by Cezanne and El Greco.

Late in his career, his style became more fanciful, as this drawing of a well-dressed woman with a pipe attests. His spirited use of line is complimented by the subject's forceful gaze, creating a work that is at first whimsical, yet leaves something unstated, almost mysterious.

Philip Evergood’s work is in the collections of nearly 40 American museums, including the National Gallery of Art, the Los Angeles County Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and the Whitney Museum Of American Art.
