Oskar Kokoschka
(1886-1980)
One of the best known of the German Expressionist painters in the years after World War One, Oskar Kokoschka became a major figure in new art movements in Europe in the '20s and '30s.
But his career was short-circuited when the Nazis condemned Kokoschka as one of a group they deemed "degenerate artists." He was in distinguished company: Among others censored were many of the most significant names in modern art, including Vincent Van Gogh and Henri Matisse. Kokoschka's work is in numerous museum collections, both here and in Europe.
